Unlocking the Future of Gymnastics for All: Insights from the FIG Colloquium 2024

The worldwide Gym For All (GFA) community recently gathered in Aracaju, Brazil, for the FIG Gymnastics for All Colloquium 2024. From the 19th to the 22nd of March 58 delegates representing 33 nations came together to discuss the future of GFA in an inspiring exchange of ideas and insights.

Hosted by the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation (CBG), the event provided participants with a platform to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations for the discipline while providing inspiring networking opportunities.

“To start of the colloquium, we had a reflective session on past achievements and future goals,” explained Marti Heri, Development Manager of Gymnastics SA who was in attendance. “We also delved into lessons learned from recent events; 2023 Word Gymnaestrada in Amsterdam and the upcoming GFA challenges, such as the World Gym for Life Challenge that will take place in 2025.” With a shared commitment to promoting GFA on a global scale, participants also discussed how to enhance the GFA Manual to better serve the needs of GFA enthusiasts worldwide.

The second day of the colloquium saw a spotlight being shone on the important role universities could play in advancing GFA. “We explored the importance of scientific research and collaboration with academic institutions in driving innovation and promoting best practices for GFA by drawing inspiration from countries (Switzerland, Japan and Brazil) with successful university partnerships,” added Heri. Delegates explored strategies for potentially integrating GFA into educational curricula and enhancing the quality of coaching in schools.

As the colloquium reached its end, delegates turned their attention to regional initiatives and collaborative efforts aimed at advancing GFA at the grassroots level. “The host and some of the participating federations (including South Africa) showed presentations that showcased ongoing projects and outlined the goals for the future demonstrating the collective commitment to nurturing and sustaining GFA on a global scale.” South Africa plays a pivotal role in developing the African continent with Marti Heri appointed international expert to UAG Academy and Donny Jurgens representing UAG Gymnastics for All Committee.

Reflecting on the event, Marti added, “This gathering has been so important in creating a space for collaboration and innovation within the GFA community. It has provided us with a roadmap for unlocking the full potential of gymnastics as a sport for all, and I am excited to see the transformative impact of our collective efforts.”
