Gymnastics South Africa welcomes decision on para-gymnastics
Gymnastics South Africa welcomes the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) recent decision to advance para-gymnastics as a recognized discipline within artistic gymnastics. This decision opens a world of possibilities for differently abled athletes to participate in Artistic gymnastics.
“This decision is a huge step forward for gymnastics as this commitment by FIG allows the sport to develop and give access to athletes who previously simply could not compete at the same level as able-bodied gymnasts,” said Adele Heine, President of Gymnastics South Africa. “It’s not just about more competition opportunities; it’s about representing diverse abilities and inspiring future generations of gymnasts to dream big and see themselves as champions.”
With the hope of debuting at the Olympics in 2032, para-gymnastics will be open to gymnasts with a wide range of physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities. It’s an inclusive approach that aligns deeply with Gymnastics SA’s vision of a sport that embraces all abilities. “We’re excited to support this initiative, empowering South African gymnasts to follow their passion and compete at the highest level,” Heine added.
Heine continued, “For Gymnastics SA, this is an inspiring moment, building on our longstanding commitment to include people with disabilities within our programs. When we hosted the DSIGO Games in South Africa, we saw firsthand the extraordinary talent and determination of gymnasts with Down Syndrome, and this decision by FIG opens that vision to even more athletes. The inclusion of para-gymnastics within artistic gymnastics is a progressive step for the sport, and it reflects a commitment to inclusivity that has long been central to our values.”
As Gymnastics South Africa moves forward, the organization is committed to creating an inclusive gymnastics environment, providing the resources, training, and support systems needed to empower gymnasts of all abilities. Gymnastics South Africa looks forward to partnering with our community to ensure para-gymnastics has a lasting and transformative impact across our nation.
